Review Showed Anti-Polish Bias

From the Beaver County Times, January 31, 1992.  As an alt-comics nerd, I considered this letter especially noteworthy because American Splendor creator Harvey Pekar hated Maus in part due to the Poles-as-pigs metaphor; from 1989 to 1990, he brightened my existence by feuding epically in print, in The Comics Journal, with critic (and Maus fan) R. Fiore, who had no problems with the porcine content.  Regarding Pekar’s opinions, Fiore wrote one of the greatest (as in nastiest) sentences my twentysomething self had ever read: “Now that you’ve all had time to digest Harvey Pekar’s article in Journal #130—and what a great, big, fiber-laden chunk it was—it’s as good a time as any to examine the stool.”  Yes, Fiore compared the article to a piece of shit.  Classy.—DVM, April 5, 2018, 4:40 PM EST
